The spiritual modality that kept The Grateful Dead performing.
That's right--every year, The Grateful Dead would gather to flip I-Ching coins to see if they should continue on as a band. Each year, the correspondence was to do so.
So What Is It?
I-Ching is the Chinese form of divination that expresses the human condition through its polarities: the yin and the yang: the positive and negative, the dark and light, the above and below, male and female. Similar to the 78 cards within the tarot, 12 zodiacal signs in astrology and the 10 sephiroth in Kabbalah, the I-Ching has 64 hexagrams to reveal the polarities of nature--and of our circumstances.
How It Works
The I Ching is structured around two tri-grams; two units that are each made of three (tri) horizontal lines (grams). The first one is three solid lines and the second one is three broken lines:
The solid line trigram represents the masculine, positive charge, earth element quality (the yang), and the broken line represents... you guessed it! The feminine, negative charges, water element quality (the yin).
There are eight ways to combine them:
When we combine all the possible combinations of the trigrams together, we get sixty-four hexagrams (six lined figures):
This is a perfect number as it equals ten (64: 6+4=10). We’ve now exhausted all possible combinations of this simple equation.
The sixty-four hexagrams accurately represent the entire variables of the human experience.
